ECG graph paper

An ECG measures changes in voltage across different areas of the heart, using electrodes that are stuck on to the body. The signal is amplified and displayed on graph paper.

For ease of use the speed of paper print out and voltage gain settings are always standardised across all ECG machines. The paper speed should be set at 25mm/s and the voltage gain at 10mm/mV

Understanding timings on the ECG

The X-axis of the ECG corresponds to time and the Y-axis corresponds to voltage change within the heart.

  • One Large 5x5 Square represents 0.2s on the x-axis

  • One Small Square represents 0.04s on the x-axis
